We have always been interested in martial arts based training and have seen a heap of fitness fanatics adding BJJ as part of their training regime and seeing amazing changes to their physique and fitness. We thought it was timely to chat with Ross Weeding – Founder and Owner of de Been 100% Jiu Jitsu right here in Ipswich.
What exactly is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and how is it different to other martial arts?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Commonly known as BJJ) is a martial art based on grappling and ground fighting, focusing on the skill of controlling one’s opponent through techniques that force him or her to submit. It prides itself on being known as the “Gentle Art”, allowing a smaller, weaker person to use leverage and submissions (chokes and locks) to defend themselves against a larger opponent.
There are no punches or kicks in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is one of the reasons we are able to train at a much higher intensity, which allows the student to become more comfortable in uncomfortable situations.
What kind of a workout can you expect when participating in a class?
Generally all classes begin with short warm up drills and stretching.
This is normally followed by technique instruction and practice. During this section of class you train with your partner in a controlled manner, working through the technique to ensure the movements are being applied correctly. This also gives the Instructor time to walk around the class to correct any mistakes or to provide further details for the more advanced students.
Towards the end of class all members will undertake live training in the form of timed rounds. This gives the students an opportunity to see how the moves learnt work in real time, with real pressure, against various ages and sizes. In general most classes would have 5 x 5 minute rounds, although the time length can be varied for different training purposes.
What health and fitness benefits does the training have?
Jiu Jitsu training is physical but not dangerous or frightening. Because you partake in realistic full contact sparring you will quickly adapt to the demands of the training. You will soon see a remarkable change in your body-lines, leading to weight loss, strengthening, flexibility and overall fitness.
The other great benefits come in the form of confidence, humility, problem solving and being part of a team environment, often feeling like “family”. With Jiu Jitsu you are put into very uncomfortable positions which force you to relax, evaluate and problem solve on the best way to escape or survive. In times of defeat in training, or during competition, you are forced to “tap” or submit to your opponent. This reinforces, especially in children, that you can’t always be the winner, and that sometimes you need to work harder, practice more, or make smarter decisions.
This pressure, both physically and mentally, can be transferred to all sorts of scenarios in life, whether that is at home or at work.
What makes your business unique?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is hard. Hard physically. Hard mentally. But that brings all students together and it forms a community. This is not only present within our own club, but anytime you visit other BJJ clubs. There is a special bond amongst all people who train BJJ.
We set out from the very start, not to be the biggest club in Ipswich, but to have a solid club built with good people. We strive on our culture within our club and the people we have training in our centre.
Our club is also part of the de Been Jiu Jitsu lineage, so our Jiu Jitsu is pure and straight from the source, as Peter de Been was the pioneer of Jiu Jitsu coming to Australia, and trained directly under Carlos Gracie Jr.
Jiu Jitsu aside, with the help of my business partner, have built a Wellness Centre where all your physical, mental and emotional treatment needs can be met. Happiness is important on AND off the mats.
What is your background?
I have been training various martial arts since I was a teenager, including Karate and Kung Fu. It was whilst training Kung Fu that they held a seminar in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by John B Will. The week following the seminar I quit Kung Fu and started my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey that was 2004.
I have always loved the BJJ lifestyle (yes it is a lifestyle) and often through my learning thought how cool would this be to have my own club. I struggled with the thought for many years, hounded my partner, and kept my dreams to myself before being stubbornly pushed to follow my dreams.
I still work full time shift work, so am incredibly busy, but the club is my happy place. I love being able to open up my doors and welcome like minded students in to train, all of which I consider my friends. The people I have been lucky enough to meet and train under is amazing. I still would love to hope to do this full time one day, who wouldn’t want to quit their day job and work full time in something they love and have devoted their life too!
What are the main classes and services offered by your business?
As our name suggests, we offer 100% Jiu Jitsu. We currently offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes to both Adults and Juniors. We are one of the only 100% pure Brazilian Jiu Jitsu clubs in the region, and we feel by focusing on that alone, it allows us to teach the art at such a high level.
The only other class we offer is Women’s Self Defence classes. These are purely just an opportunity to offer the Women of Ipswich some tools to help protect themselves. We don’t pretend to train them to become fighters, we just wanted to offer something for them to protect themselves in the best possible manner if the situation ever arose.
We also share the building with Whole Body Wellness Ipswich which covers all the Alternative Therapy needs to ensure we are at our best off the mats.
